How do I get my Home ready for the Filby Team

At Filby Builders, we treat your home with the same respect we’d show our own. But let’s be honest: a renovation is a bit like a big house party—it’s exciting and the results are amazing, but it can be a bit noisy and there’s always a bit of a cleanup at the end!

To help us get the work done smoothly and as quickly as possible, here is a quick guide on how to prepare before the skips arrive.

1. Making Some Room

We’ve got plenty of muscle to move the odd heavy sofa, but for the most part, we need a "clear run" to work efficiently.

  • The "Clear Out" Rule: If it’s not bolted down, it’s best to move it. Please clear out all cupboards, ornaments, and furniture from the work zone.

  • The Dust Factor: We use high-quality dust sheets and we tidy up every day, but construction dust is a bit of a ninja. It has a way of finding its way into every nook and cranny. If you have precious items in the next room, it’s worth covering them up or moving them safely away.

2. The "Structure" Decisions (Baths & Rafters)

Some choices might seem like they only matter at the very end, but they actually change how we build the "bones" of the room.

  • The Bath Size: If you have your heart set on a deep, heavy stone bath, we need to know the specs before we floor the room. Why? Because we may need to reinforce the rafters or joists to support that extra weight.

  • The Kitchen Layout: Knowing exactly where the appliances go helps us get the plumbing and electrics in the perfect spot the first time around.

  • The Rule: If it’s heavy or involves water and power, let’s talk about it early!

3. The "Final Look" (Steel vs. Brass)

It might feel strange to pick light switches when the walls aren't even plastered yet, but these little details make a big difference.

  • Sockets & Switches: Are we going for classic stainless steel, modern brushed steel, or white?

  • Lead Times: Some bespoke tiles or high-end taps can take weeks to arrive. If they aren’t on-site when we’re ready to fit them, it can slow down the finish.

  • Our Advice: Grab a folder (or a Pinterest board!) and try to finalize your finishes early. It makes the final week of the build much more relaxing.

No Question is Too Silly!

We know there is a lot to think about. If you’re staring at a tape measure wondering if a specific shower tray will fit, or if you're stuck between two types of flooring, just give us a shout.

We’re a family team, and we’ve been through this ourselves. We’d much rather spend ten minutes on the phone helping you decide now than have to move a pipe two inches to the left later on!

Let’s get your project started! The Filby Team
