The Granary: A Two-Year Labour of Love
“A masterclass in building craft... innovation and inventive solutions.”
— Sussex Heritage Trust Awards
This wasn’t just a project; it was a two-year journey into the heart of Sussex history. When we first stepped into this raw, 19th-century timber-framed barn, we knew it wouldn't be a standard build. It required more than just tools—it required a total partnership.
The Challenge of the "Raw"
This was building at its most complex. To bring the barn back to life, we worked hand-in-hand with brilliant architects and specialist archaeologists to ensure every stone and beam was respected. We even had to master the "un-glamorous" side of heritage living—navigating the complexities of bespoke off-mains drainage (the high-tech version of the old cesspit!) in soil that hadn't been disturbed for centuries.
Why it Succeeded: Honesty over Everything
A project of this scale only works if there is total trust. For two years, the owners weren't just clients; they were part of the Filby family. Through every archaeological discovery and structural puzzle, we kept things honest, transparent, and relaxed.
The Filby Showcase
This barn allowed our team to truly show what we can do. From conservation-led timber repairs to the "floating" modern internal fit-out, we combined 40 years of family skill with fresh, innovative thinking. It’s "Out of the Ordinary" in its truest form—and having the Sussex Heritage Trust recognise it with an award was the cherry on top.

We have a confession! We often choose not to spend lots of our money on snazzy photographers and instead prefer to - keep it real - and share the photos provided by you.
